Is Leasing Ever a Good Idea?

By Michael R Parker

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question. Although leasing may be a bad idea if you cannot afford the payments, for those that plan on getting a car in the next few years and do not plan on taking trips it might be a good idea. However, the key word here is that it MIGHT be a good idea.

The largest downside here is that you can only put a certain amount of miles on the car if you are leasing it. For instance, 15,000 is a very common number for a lease although in some cases you have to upgrade from 10,000 or 12,000 which will usually come in a standard lease. This means that cross country road trips are going to be out of the question especially if you drive a significant amount of miles to work every day.

The second downside of a lease is that it is going to be quite a bit more expensive then just getting a standard car payment. This is because you are driving the car in the best years of its life which is typically the first two years. You get the style and the peace of mind that you have been the only owner. This means that you should plan on getting a car every two years. This is the way to go if you get a car allowance in which you need to spend the entire allowance as you do not get to keep the extra cash.

By far the best part of a lease is that you get to drive the car when it is new and in style. This is perfect for the upper class family that only plans on driving their care while it is "new." Plus, if you are going to give the car back after 2 years so you can drive it like it is a Ferrari.

For the average family a lease is a very bad idea. However, for the affluent class who knows that they are going to buy a car every couple of years this can be a very cost effective and stylish decision. Just keep in mind that you are going to be paying quite a bit more than if you just buy the car straight up.
